My Picks of the Week! (4th June)

Hello, Muses!

Happy June! Although I absolutely hate hot weather (yes, I said it, I love the cold, wearing layered clothes, drinking hot tea, and snuggling under the covers while reading a book or watching a good movie!), I do love June! That's partly because my birthday is June 27th and also because I absolutely love BBQ food! Yummy, yummy!

Anyway, June starts off with a bit of a bang. The highly anticipated 3rd novel in Sylvia Day's Crossfire series called Entwined With You finally is here! Woohoo! Also, Phoenix, the sequel to Black City by Elizabeth Richards is out this week.

In movies, the next installment in the Die Hard franchise A Good Day to Die Hard starring Bruce Willis comes out in a nice blu-ray-dvd combo pack. If you are looking for some laughs, you may want to check out Identity Thief with Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. And if you are looking for a little star crossed romance and an interesting retelling of Romeo + Juliet, Warm Bodies may just do the trick.

Finally, in television, fans of Breaking Bad: Season 5 can get their fix before the last episodes for the final season airs in August. Season 3 of Pretty Little Liars also is available this week. And if you like FX's Wilfred, you may be interested in the original Australian show of the same name. So snatch up Wilfred: The Complete Australian series on dvd. Enjoy!

Best Wishes,

Warm Bodies
Directed by: Jonathan Levine

Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer

If true love is meant to be, what does it matter if one is human and the other a zombie? Warm Bodies is a pretty delightful, tongue-in-cheek romantic comedy loosely based on Romeo and Juliet. But the Capulets and Montagues have much more in common than do R, the hipster zombie boy character (played by Nicholas Hoult), and Julie (Teresa Palmer), a girl human. Warm Bodies takes place after the zombie apocalypse (of course), and on the surface it appears to be Twilight for zombie fans. Happily, writer-director Jonathan Levine has taken the concept a step further than the novel by Isaac Marion. As a result, Warm Bodies is just self-aware enough to keep the whole idea from being too precious. The viewer knows that the two young leads were born to be together--if they can work with their hearts and their brains. Complicating matters is the fact that Julie's dad (John Malkovich, having a wickedly good time) is the boss of all the humans fighting the zombies. Let's just say Julie definitely has her work cut out for her. Warm Bodies will thrill younger viewers who adore Twilight, but fans of great romantic comedies with a light touch will like it just as much.

Vexed: Series 2

Starring: Toby Stephens, Miranda Raison

Two bickering cops make one great team

London cop Jack Armstrong (Toby Stephens, Jane Eyre, Die Another Day) has been assigned a new partner, and he's not happy about it. Worried that "George" will cramp his freewheeling style and tell him how to do his job, Jack is shocked to meet bright, beautiful DI Georgina Dixon (Miranda Raison, MI-5) instead.

The two detectives couldn't be more different. He's a slacker; she's a fast-tracker. He's cocky, she's cool. He's slovenly, sexist, and set in his ways. She's smart, self-reliant, and serious about her career. In spite of themselves, they learn to work together, solving a murder at a car dealership and the gruesome death of a headmaster at an exclusive school, among other cases. Stephens and Raison "fairly crackle" (The Independent, U.K.) with chemistry in this British buddy cop drama with a twist.
