MAY RELEASE MADNESS! My Picks of the Week! (May 1)

Happy Monday!

Tomorrow is May 1st and what a way to start off the month! In Adult books, Gulliver Takes Manhattan by Justin Luke Zirilli has been getting a lot of buzz. I personally look forward to reading that one. If you haven't noticed already, there are quite a few Young Adult books coming out tomorrow, many being sequels or continuations of specific series. I know most of you are jumping up and down in anticipation for Veronica Roth's Insurgent, sequel to Divergent. The 3 that I have my eyes on are Crazy Dangerous by Andrew Klavan, The Last Princess by Galaxy Craze, and The Vicious Deep by Zoraida Cordova.

In movies we have a couple of films that are already out on dvd, but are finally being released on blu-ray, one being Meet Joe Black which I am super excited about. If you like action and women that kick a** then you might want to try Haywire, starring MMA fighter Gina Carano. If you want a good date movie that will make you laugh and cry at the same time, then New Years Eve is definitely a must and is my personal favorite in the movie category this week.

Not much going on in TV Series, but some of you may be excited for the release of older shows finally being put on dvd for the first time, such as the animated series Shazzan and the original Invisible Man.

So what releases are you most excited about this week?

New Years Eve

Directed by: Gary Marshall

Starring: Hilary Swank, Michelle Pfeiffer

New Year's Eve is all about parties, glitz, a midnight kiss, and maybe a few short-lived resolutions, right? Or could it be about something more? Valentine's Day writer Katherine Fugate and director Garry Marshall have once again joined forces to explore one of the most emotionally charged days of the year. Their uncanny ability to tell multiple stories at the same time, to intertwine those stories in the most unexpected ways, and to make sure viewers are emotionally invested in every single character makes the film an intriguing puzzle. Of course, a cast list that reads like an award-nomination roster doesn't hurt its success either. Among the host of "main characters" in the story is Claire Morgan (Hilary Swank), the woman in charge of the ball drop in Times Square. Naturally things don't go quite as planned and she's forced to do some serious on-the-spot improvising--oh, and it should be noted that she's deathly afraid of heights and there's somewhere else she really should be on New Year's Eve. Then there's the suddenly rebellious tween daughter Hailey (Abigail Breslin), who runs off to meet her boyfriend in Times Square for a New Year's Eve kiss, with her panicked mom (Sarah Jessica Parker) in hot pursuit. Mousy secretary Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) decides to finally act on her long list of New Year's resolutions and enlists the unlikely help of courier Paul (Zac Efron). An exclusive New Year's Eve party throws together caterer Laura (Katherine Heigl), entertainer Jensen (Jon Bon Jovi), and sous chef Ava (Sofia Vergara). And then there's Sam (Josh Duhamel), a wealthy playboy who just can't seem to resist keeping an unlikely appointment to meet a mystery woman he met by chance last New Year's Eve and hasn't seen since (think An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle). Other notable talent includes Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Seacrest, Hector Elizondo, Halle Berry, Robert De Niro, Lea Michele, Cary Elwes, Seth Meyers, and a host of others. While this film could easily run like a parade of stars or a rehash of the successful Valentine's Day, it's a powerful film in its own right that leaves viewers pondering whether New Year's Eve might really be about second chances, hope, and embracing what will be.

Gary's Quick Picks: Movie Recommendations by Guest Blogger Gary Dion

The other day I found myself in need of a couple movies to watch. I actually had some down time so I went to MovieStop to see what I could come up with. I immediately found 3 movies that all turned out to be great finds. Let me share them with you.

There was The Way starring Martin Sheen which was directed by his son E
milio Estevez. Then there was the movie Retreat which had a stellar cast, including Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton, and Jamie Bell. Finally, I watched Puncture with Chris Evens playing the lead role.

---------- ---------- ---------- ----------

This is a story about a father and son. The son (played by Emilio Estevez) is trying to find himself, so he decides to go on a trek. Many people take this journey every year for their own reasons-- religious, personal, mental or to just find themselves. On the first day of his journey, the son has an accident and dies. I know this sounds like a major spoiler, but this is revealed in the trailer and on the back of the dvd box.

Anyway, his father, played by Martin Sheen, must now travel over there to retrieve his son's body. While there, he learns what his son was trying to do and decides to undertake the journey on his own. He then has his son's body cremated and leaves the ashes along "The Way".

As he travels, he meets up with several characters while walking-- all searching for a way t
o defeat their own demons. The movie is touching and funny. Emilio Estevez has written and directed several movies and this is his best one so far.

With a very small, but excellent cast, this thriller will wow you. A husband and wife need to get away from everything to try and reconnect after an event affects them. The husband is portrayed by Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later, Inception, Red Eye, Batman Begins) and the wife is played by Thandie Newton (Mission Impossible 2, ER). They rent a house that is located on a small, desolated island when a man stumbles toward the house, then passes out. He's battered and bleeding so the couple bring him into the house to help him.

The mystery man is portrayed by Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, The Eagle, Man on a Ledge). When he awakens, he tells the couple that he was involved in an accident where he was stationed that included a deadly virus that was supposedly released into the atmosphere and now they must seal up the house to try and prevent infection. But while he frantically runs about the house boarding up doors and windows, the couple begin to wonder if he is telling the truth or if he is simply psychotic/delusional.

The ending is perfect. The three actors all do an incredible job. So when you do sit down to watch it, just relax and hold your breath for the ride...oh and also just in case there is a virus going around...

Based on a true story, Chris Evens (or better known now as Captain America) gives a magnificent performance as a lawyer (one of the dreaded "Ambulance chasing" kind) who takes on a case more for the prestige then for the actual subject. But he soon discovers the importance of the case. It involves the invention of the disposable needle for hospitals.

At the time, hospitals were using the reusable needles but there were numerous reports of nurses getting infected by them. The disposable needles would obviously stop this from happening. The lawsuit was against the company that made and distributed the reusable needles.

Throughout the movie, Chris Evan's character is the total opposite of his role as Captain America, but somehow he still stands up as a hero. After you watch this film, let me know what you think about the ending by leaving a comment. Do you think it was just another "Hollywood" ending?

---------- ---------- ---------- ----------

So now your day is planned out for you with these 3 great titles. All you need now is a quick stop at Chick-Fil-A to grab a platter of nuggets so you have something to munch on as you watch!

I have been checking her website almost daily, waiting to get a glimpse of the artwork. If you've been following my blog, then you know I dedicated a post awhile back on books that started out with one cover, but later was changed. Enclave was originally titled Razorland and had a completely different cover which I actually preferred. You can view it and read my thoughts about it HERE.

So what do you guys think about Outpost's cover art? While I am not sure if this is the final look, I will say I am a tad bit disappointed. I wasn't a huge fan of Enclave's cover and this one looks...well, juvenile. Neither showcases the intensity of this series. I haven't read Outpost yet, but if it is anything like Enclave, Ann Aguirre will be back on the NY Times Bestseller list with a quickness.

Outpost hits bookshelves on September 4th! Pre-order HERE!

THE TRIBE: Season One, Part 2 DVD Boxset

So back in January, I posted the exciting news that one of my favorite television series, called The Tribe, was finally being put out on dvd in the US! Since the show was made in New Zealand and only put out on dvd overseas, it was hard for us US fans to get our hands on the beloved episodes we remembered so fondly that used to play on the Disney channel. You can read more about the show and my earlier thoughts HERE.

Anyway, so in March, The Tribe, Season 1, Part 1 was finally released on dvd. Since each season ran for over 50 episodes, I guess Shout! Factory decided they could make more money by splitting the seasons in half. This worried me because my fear was that part 1 would get released and then it would be forgotten, and I would be stuck with half a season on dvd. But thank the gods, Season 2, Part 2 will be out on dvd June 12th! You can pre-order your copy HERE! If you haven't figured it out already, the artwork to the left is the official dvd cover for part 2. I like this cover much better then part 1. Again, you can see the artwork for part 1 HERE. Even though they look similar in design, my beef with part 1's cover is how distorted Bray's face looked up top. It totally didn't look like Bray! Season 1 Part 2's cover, however, showcases Lexx, Tai-san, and Ebony and all three are looking good. So I am not sure what happened with the photo they used for Bray in cover 1.

Even though I am happier with part 2's artwork, nothing can beat the UK's boxset dvd cover that was released years ago. Check it out on the right. I'm not sure what it is about overseas boxsets, but I tend to generally like thier artwork more then ours. It's not always the case, but I've even found myself liking foreign cover art for books more than their US editions, such as Jana Oliver's Demon Trappers Series.

So what do you think??? Leave comments on your thoughts! Are any of you Enclave or The Tribe fans?
