One Sick Muse

Hello my poor, neglected Muses.

I am sure some of you have been wondering where the hell I disappeared to. I know it's not uncommon for me to go ghost for a week or two, but I normally will let you guys know it's because I need a break or just got busy with trying to juggle working 2 jobs and the blog.

Sadly, the reason behind my recent absent has been a bit more serious. I ended up getting severely sick, so sick I spend a few days in the hospital last week. YES, I am okay and somewhat on the mend. So now you are probably wondering what kind of sickness? Well, I wish I could give you a definite answer. My doctors and I personally think it's Mono (Mononucleosis), but the tests have come back negative. However, I've heard that negative test results is not uncommon when it comes to Mono, so I am trying to stay positive-- who the hell would want something worse than Mono, right?

I am going to spare everyone the gory details of my illness, but if anyone has ever had Mono, then you know one of the most common symptoms is fatigue. I've been so disgustingly tired, no energy, so that is one of the biggest reasons why I haven't been able to update my blog. It's been very frustrating because I felt like I was finally back to keeping up with reviews and requests and BOOM, had to get seriously sick. BLAH!!!!

Okay, so I am going to try to stay positive by telling you guys about some upcoming goodies that you can look forward to seeing on my blog in the coming weeks. As most of you already know, I read and fell in love with Matthew Dicks' Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend which I reviewed HERE. I've been in contact with Matthew Dicks and he not only completed an author Q&A, but has given me a signed copy of his book to use as a Giveaway! So stay tuned for that! Also, I have finished reading Shadows Cast By Stars by Catherine Knutsson which also blew me away. She agreed to do an author Q&A and Giveaway as well!

So I have some great things lined up. I just need to find the energy to get things up and posted. The good news is, I've been trying to use this downtime to read books that I've been dying to read but haven't had the time to since I normally read ARCS for review or review for requests. It's nice to just read for the pleasure, to grab a random book off my shelf instead of limiting myself to what I HAVE to read. But don't get me wrong. I love reading ARCS and I love getting author requests and helping out in authors in my unique way. But sometimes a girl just needs time to herself. So I am trying to look at the positive in this very depressing situation I find myself in.

I will slowly be making some much needed updates and changes to my blog. Hopefully by next week I can post Matthew Dicks' author Q&A as well as the Giveaway. I want to thank everyone for hanging in there and still stopping by. I promise to start slowly making my rounds to stop by and see what everyone has been up to. I've missed the blog world and my Muses!

Best Wishes,

Updates: A Few Changes

Happy Saturday, my lovely Muses!

There are a few quick updates I wanted to bring to everyone's attention that will be going into effect this week at The Muses Circle.

Movie Review Saturdays & Movie/TV Series News & Highlights

If you've been following my blog, then you know I try to post movie reviews on Saturdays. However, lately I've been so busy that the movie section of my blog has been severely neglected. So, I came up with this idea. Instead of posting nothing on Saturdays if I can't get around to writing a movie review, I will post the highlights of movie/tv series news that week. It could be about casting news, a movie trailer that was just released, etc. I really like this idea since I am constantly on movie websites, trying to find out new scoops on upcoming releases. It's my pleasure to keep everyone in the loop!

Monday's "My Picks of the Week": Books/E-books & Blu-ray/DVD

On Mondays I post my weekly "Picks of the Week" which is basically a list of new releases (books and movies) that either I plan on buying or what I think the masses would find interesting.

After each book or movie, I embed links. If it's a book, there is usually a link to the author's website and a link to pre-order or purchase the book on amazon.com or bn.com. The link I use that sends you to amazon.com or bn.com is usually for the hardback or paperback copy of the book. Since e-books have become so popular, I decided that I will also include a link to the e-book version if one is available.

As for movies and/or tv series, I post a link to its official website and a link to pre-order or purchase it on amazon.com. Usually, the link I use directs you to purchase it on blu-ray first, and if the movie or tv series has not been released yet on blu-ray, then to the dvd version. I recently realized that not everyone may know what blu-rays are, so here is a quick lesson.

Blu-ray vs. DVD
I know that some of you know what the difference is between dvd and blu-ray. Some of you may not. If you don't, you can go HERE which explains the technical differences between the two. All you really need to know is that blu-ray discs are superior in the quality of picture, sound, and special features. So if you have a big, flat screen tv (37" or more), it probably makes sense to start upgrading your dvd collection to blu-ray. Just like vhs movies are basically obsolete, one day dvds will too, now that blu-rays are so popular.

But don't despair. While blu-ray discs can only be watched on blu-ray players or PS3's, dvds can be played on both dvd AND blu-ray players. So here is my suggestion. Many movies now are being released in a blu-ray, dvd combo set. That is what you want to look for and buy. Here are the reasons why:

1) If you haven't upgraded to blu-ray yet, you can still view the movie on dvd, but will still have the blu-ray once you decide to upgrade

2) If you already have upgraded, blu-ray/dvd combo sets are great because you may not have a blu-ray player in every room, therefore the dvd comes in handy. Or, maybe the kids want to watch something in their room but they only have a dvd player. Get my point?

So from now on, I will embed a link for the blu-ray and dvd versions of each movie and tv series. I will also try to mention if they are available in a blu-ray-dvd combo set.

NIFTY BLOGS SECTION

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I wanted to create a section on my blog where I collect buttons from other blogs that I check out on a weekly basis. Scratch that idea. At least for right now. Thanks for my blogger friend, Intricate Knot, I became aware of the Blog Roll option. So you will notice to the left of my blog a little section called "Nifty Blogs I Love!" For right now, I limited it to 10 blogs, but that doesn't mean I only check those. I just want to try it out for a little bit and if I like it, I will probably add more blogs to the list.

Well, I think that is it for right now. So all of these little changes/updates should go into effect starting Monday. Until then, I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend!

Your resident Muse,

An Update & My Picks of the Week! (April 17th)

Hey everyone!

Sorry for posting this late, but I had a busy weekend and work was crazy today! Before moving on to the releases this week, I just wanted to thank everyone that participated in my "Book-to-Movie" E-book Giveaway! It ended on Saturday, and I am in the process of contacting the winners. I will name the official winners on Wednesday once I have heard from everyone!

There are quite a few interesting book releases this week. In adult, I can see White Horse by Alex Adams getting on a few "Must Read Books of 2012" lists. I want to know what the significance of the "white horse" title and cover art is... In Young Adult, Norwegian author Johan Harstad may just be someone to watch out for with his novel 172 Hours on the Moon, which thankfully has been translated in English by Tara Chace.

The big release in movies this week is Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol starring Tom Cruise. But there are quite a few indie films that can't be ignored and have been getting a lot of buzz. Ladies, we get to to see Michael Fassbender completely naked in Shame and veteran actor Michael Biehn loose his mind after a group of people are trapped together in The Divide.

Finally, animated television seems to be the popular releases in the TV Series category this week: American Dad: Volume 7 and Bob's Burgers: Season 1 to name a couple.

Enjoy!

The Muses Circle Reaches 100 Members!

Good morning my beautiful Muses!

I know Fridays are normally reserved for book & movie cover art (last Friday I introduced a new Guest Blogger), but you can imagine my surprise when I jumped on my blog this morning and noticed that The Muses Circle had reached 100 members! It's so hard to believe that only a couple of months ago, I had less then 10 followers and my blog looked like a ghost town. I just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for their patience, support, feedback, and help. I decided to dedicate the rest of this post to updating everyone on what you can expect to see soon on The Muses Circle, such as giveaways, author interviews, recommendations, and more guest bloggers.

GIVEAWAYS

In the past couple of months, I have learned so much by just checking out other people's blogs. I noticed that giveaways are a big part of a blogger's world-- it not only helps to attract more traffic but also is a nice way to reward your followers. I have yet to do a giveaway, but I plan to start as early as next week. My giveaways will not only be for new releases but I was thinking about doing giveaways for older releases from my own library. I am not am impulse buyer, but I do have quite a few books sitting on my shelf that are BRAND NEW that I have looked back on and thought to myself, "There is no way I am going to read this book." So rather then try to sell or donate them, offering them in a giveaway might be a fun way to make room on my bookshelves.

AUTHOR INTERVIEWS

I love communicating with authors. I recently read and reviewed JC Andrijeski's Rook: Allie's War #1. JC is so awesome that she agreed to do an Author Q & A and a Giveaway. Hopefully that will be posted in the next couple of weeks. I also have been in contact with a few other authors that are willing to do interviews, I just have to work with their schedules.

GUEST BLOGGERS & RECOMMENDATIONS

My Guest Blogger posts have been working out great! I like to post at least 2 reviews a week (a book and movie review) but sometimes I am in the middle of reading a book or haven't had the chance to watch a movie that I want to review. That is where my Guest Bloggers come in. My friends and colleagues have been wonderful with submitting reviews, recommendations, etc. So when I myself don't have a review ready to post, I will usually turn to one of my Guest Bloggers to help with a post.

This coming week I will be introducing everyone to my next Guest Blogger, Brian Warriner, followed by his book/movie comparison & analysis of Prayers for Bobby. My "Picks of the Week" posts are like my recommendations for everyone but I hope to get more of my Guest Bloggers to recommend books and movies as well.

In closing, I just want to thank everyone again for being a part of The Muses Circle. This blog has been such a therapeutic, positive, fun, (and can sometimes be frustrating because it takes a lot to keep up with everything!) experience and I couldn't have done it without my Muses! So just hang in there a little bit more and I promise to start sharing some goodies with you!

Happy Friday!

An Update & My Picks of the Week! (Feb. 21th)

Hello Muses!

Before I carry on with my picks of the week, I just wanted to give people an update on a few things. Last week was very crazy for me-- normally I try to post on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays (every other day except for Fri & Sat) but I ended up posting from Sun the 12th to Thurs the 16th-- that's 5 days straight on top of working 2 jobs! So let's just say I was a bit burnt out!

I was supposed to do a post for last Friday (Cover Art Friday) and Saturday (my Take Shelter movie analysis) but I just couldn't find the energy nor the motivation. Since it was President's Day weekend, I had off from working at the school and decided to go get my hair done-- I am half Italian and half African American so the new "do" that you see in the pic to the left took all day! But it was worth it :) Then me and the boyfriend decided to have a romantic weekend since we have been so busy and didn't get a chance to celebrate our anniversary last month. The picture you see to the right is us getting ready to head out to Texas Roadhouse for dinner! So I apologize to anyone who was looking forward to last Friday & Saturday's posts.

Despite my mini-hiatus, I did finish reading a book that I will be posting the review for on Wednesday and I am half way through another-- so at least I got some reading done!

This Friday, instead of my normal "Cover Art" post, I will be introducing everyone to my next guest blogger, Jake Henderson who is a horror addict AND expert! Saturday his post will be about exploitation films followed up by a review of one. So if you like movies and want to learn about a rare genre of films, Jake's post on Saturday will be very interesting and informative.

Okay, I think that is enough on the updates. I hope everyone is enjoying what's left of there President's Day weekend!

May the gods be forever in your favor,

MY PICKS OF THE WEEK! (February 21st)

For this week, it looks like film rules. I didn't add this movie to my list but in case you see it in your navigation, you can skip Son of No One starring Channing Tatum. The movie received horrible reviews, but I don't always judge a movie based on that. So I figured to give it a chance last night--and wish I hadn't wasted my time. An hour and a half I could have been reading! GRRRR!

Anyway, enjoy!

Happy New Year & Welcome!

Happy New Year! I know I'm a few days late, but that's because I've been busy giving my blog a facelift. For those of you who know me, I'm sure you are tired of hearing the word "facelift" but I think it's the best word to describe what I've been doing. I grew tired of struggling to read my own blog due to the horrifying "dot" background...I figured if I had trouble viewing my own blog, I could only imagine how others felt while visiting. My incredibly talented and creative best friend Adria at Neverend (she makes awesome websites, btw!) had plans to make me my own website...but then I started thinking, if she makes the site, how will I know how to do my own updates? I absolutely suck at html and if I ran into any problems, it's not like I could call her to come over and show me how to fix things since she lives in Colorado! So, I decided to stop whining and try working with what I already had. So during the holidays I just kept playing around with blogger. I watched some "How To..." youtube videos, bugged the hell out of the ever gracious Kristin F. over at her blog GrowUp YA, called my best friend to help me with my banner issue that had me frustrated all day...of course it took her only MINUTES to fix the problem! *sigh* But I must say, the end results look great. I'm proud of myself for figuring things out on my own.

Now, just be aware that my new blog is still a work in progress. The "Review Policy" page is still under construction, and I am still working on learning how to add certain buttons, polls, and other goodies to the side bars of the blog to make things more interesting and up-to-date. Once I get more followers, I plan to eventually add contests, author interviews, etc.

If you are visiting for the first time or are a brave soul that decided to give my blog a 2nd chance after being scared away awhile ago, I put together a little something below to help everyone better understand what The Muses Circle is all about and what you will find here.

What "The Muses Circle" means

If you haven't checked out the "About" section of my blog, then I'll give you a quick history lesson. The Muses were the Greek goddesses who presided over the arts & sciences. They were believed to inspire all artists, especially poets, philosophers, and musicians. In paintings, they were often depicted dancing in a circle with Apollo, who is the god of the arts (among other things). I guess that is why the name of my blog fits so perfectly. Since I'm a lover of the arts and I enjoy reviewing different mediums, what better way to celebrate books and cinema then at The Muses Circle?

What makes The Muses Circle different from other review sites

Without sounding repetitive, my blog may differ from other review sites simply because my love for the arts cannot be put into one specific category. My passion for reading & literature is just as strong as my interest in watching movies & television series. I have well over 1,000 movies and over 400 tv series from all over the world. Crazy, right? So, instead of making a blog that is only focused on reviewing books, I made one to encompass all the things I enjoy talking about.

What you will find while navigating The Muses Circle

Here is where I tell you about some of the updates and changes I've made to my blog. My "About" page is pretty straight forward-- it gives you some background information about myself and my blog. All of my reviews have been archived on the right side bar on the main page and are in order by year, month, and date. Since I review books, movies, and tv series, I made some extra pages to help viewers find what they are looking for. For book lovers, you will find a complete list of books I've reviewed & recommended in ABC order by title on my "Book Review" page. If you are only into cinema, then you will find a complete list of my movie/tv series reviews also in ABC order on the "Movie/TV Review" page. Anything that is not a review or a recommendation can be found on the "News" page. Sometimes I go on rants about random stuff, or sadly, an actor or author may pass away-- these are the kinds of posts you will see in the "News" section. My "Review Policy" page is still under construction, but it will contain information about the types of books and movies I review and am willing to review for publishers, upcoming authors, etc. It also will include a list of guidelines if you would like to submit a review on my blog. The rest of my blog is still being updated and added to, so the best thing to do is explore and keep coming back frequently!

The reviews and who writes them

Up until now, all of the reviews from 2009-2011 have been done by myself. Now that we are in 2012 and am proud to show off my blog, I'm excited to announce that I will be having guest bloggers help me out with some reviews. This is great for 2 reasons. 1) Since I work 2 jobs, it's hard for me to write as many reviews as I would like to. Sharing this labor of love with others will help keep my blog updated frequently instead of weeks going by with no new reviews. 2) Even though I am open-minded, there are still book and movie genres that aren't on the top of my favorite list. For example, I am not a big horror fan, but my friends-- Jake at Dark Recesses of Film and Kenn-- eat, sleep, and breath that genre. My talented and beautiful friend Ali at theartistalicrozier is great with martial arts films. It only makes sense to have them do some reviews on upcoming movies & books in their area of expertise. It doesn't mean that these are the only genres they will be reviewing since all of my friends are open-minded and enjoy a broad range of categories, but having them write reviews on things they feel confident about will help keep my blog fresh and interesting. Anyone that submits a review will obviously get full credit. :)

Well, I think that's about it for this post. Again, I want to thank Kristin at GrownUp YA for all the helpful advice and detailed instructions on how to make my blog pretty :). I also want to thank my best friend, Adria at Neverend for her help with my banner...and just being my best friend all these years. ^_^ I look forward to seeing what 2012 brings to The Muses Circle!

If you have questions or comments about my blog or suggestions in regards to things that can make The Muses Circle a better experience, please feel free to leave a comment or email me directly: famulan23@gmail.com.

Best Wishes,
~Mia~
