The Muses Movie of the Month! (May 2012)

The Muses Movie of the Month is a monthly showcase, created by The Muses Circle. Its purpose is to highlight one movie I have watched in the previous month! (Thank you, Book Whales, for the idea!)

----~~~---- ~~~~ ----~~~----

One of the best movies I've watched in May:
The Divide
Directed by: Xavier Gens
Starring: Michael Biehn, Lauren German, Milo Ventimiglia
Blu-ray-DVD Combo | DVD

Synopsis: Prepare yourself for the unrated movie experience that critics are calling one of the most graphic and extreme end-of-the-world shockers of our time: As nuclear warheads rain down on Manhattan, nine strangers -- Lauren German (Hostel: Part II), Michael Biehn (Aliens, Tombstone), Milo Ventimiglia (''Heroes''), Courtney B. Vance (''Law & Order: Criminal Intent''), Ivan Gonzalez, Michael Eklund (Hunt To Kill), Ashton Holmes (''Revenge'') and Rosanna Arquette (Pulp Fiction) -- barricade themselves in their apartment building's bunker-like basement controlled by the unhinged superintendent. But within days, supplies dwindle, tempers flare and the trapped survivors find themselves overcome by treachery, madness, sexual torment and savage violence. What follows is intense. It is raw. And it is all brutally, horrifyingly real. This is THE DIVIDE.

Why you need to watch The Divide: What is said in the summary above is NOT an exaggeration. It's raw and intense, with outstanding performances by veteran actor Michael Beihn and Milo Ventimiglia.

So what is your movie of the month?

Book of the Month: May 2012

Book of the Month is a monthly event, hosted by Book Whales. This is done to highlight one of the books read in the previous month.

---- ---- ---- ----

As most of you already know, I normally post book reviews on Wednesdays. I am currently in the middle of reading The Car Thief by Theodore Weesner and didn't want to have to rush through it in order to pump out a rushed, crappy review. So everyone can expect to read my thoughts about The Car Thief next Wednesday!

In the meantime, it's a new month, which means it's time to share with everyone my favorite book of May! Oh, and did I forget to mention that I ended up creating my own meme/banner for The Muses Movie-of-the-Month?! Everyone will be able to check it out on Saturday when it gets posted for the very first time!

Anyway, here is my choice for book of the month!

----- ----- ----- ----

One of the best books I've read in May is:

Zero by: Tom Leveen
Read My Review: HERE

Why You Need to Read Zero: Aside from the fact that it is the first book I've given a perfect 5 star rating to in quite some time, Zero has a little bit of something for everyone. If you like music and live bands, you will like this book. If you like art then you will like this book. If you like books that are edgy because of specific topics like self-esteem, alcoholism, dysfunctional families, etc., then you will like this book. If you like your romances steamy, then you will like this book. Need I say more? For a book blurb and my thoughts on Zero, check out my review by clicking the link above!

So what is YOUR Book-of-the-Month for May?

Stay tuned for Saturday when I unveil my new meme and banner for The Muses Movie-of-the-Month!

My Picks of the Week! (May 8th)

Happy Monday!

So there are a few things everyone should look out for this week. First, I posted a Q&A with author Alicia K. Leppert and she allowed me to host a Giveaway of her book Emerald City! Enter for a chance to win an e-book (pdf format) copy of Emerald City HERE! Last day for entries is Thursday, May 10th. The winner will be announced on Friday, May 11th.

While there is not much going on in the adult book category, there are quite a few Young Adult releases to keep in mind. Hollyweird by Terri Clark I read personally and is a fun, lighthearted read. Keep an eye out for my review which will be posted on Wednesday. I know everyone is anticipating the release of the 5th installment of the Immortal Instruments Series called City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare. I just started reading Andrew Fukuda's The Hunt which has been getting a lot of buzz. So far it is quite interesting and a breath of fresh air.

The big releases in movies this week are Underworld 4: Awakening (also coming out in a boxset which includes all 4 movies) and the romantic drama The Vow starring Channing Tatum. I personally am interested in seeing Kawa.

Enjoy!

City of Lost Souls (The Immortal Instruments, #5)
by: Cassandra Clare

Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.

No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine’s evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?

Only a small band of Clary and Jace’s friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters’ future may h
inge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.

And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

Vow, The
Directed by: Michael Sucsy

Starring: Channing Tatum, Rachel McAdams

Can true love really conquer all? That is the question hovering over the genuinely touching, affecting drama The Vow. Based on a true story (which itself might have made a great documentary), The Vow is a showcase for the splendid acting talent of Rachel McAdams and a breakthrough role for Channing Tatum, under the deft direction of Michael Sucsy (the feature version of Grey Gardens). The story is deceptively simple: Happy young married couple Paige (McAdams) and Leo (Tatum) are, well, happy. Then a car accident puts Paige into a life-threatening coma, and upon awakening, she finds she has lost the previous five years of memories--including of being married to, or ever in love with, her beloved Leo. With lesser actors or with a more heavy-handed director, The Vow might have been predictable, melodramatic, or flat--and yet, the talents of the two stars, and the crisp, light-handed direction, make The Vow an enjoyable, deeply affecting love story.

MAY RELEASE MADNESS! My Picks of the Week! (May 1)

Happy Monday!

Tomorrow is May 1st and what a way to start off the month! In Adult books, Gulliver Takes Manhattan by Justin Luke Zirilli has been getting a lot of buzz. I personally look forward to reading that one. If you haven't noticed already, there are quite a few Young Adult books coming out tomorrow, many being sequels or continuations of specific series. I know most of you are jumping up and down in anticipation for Veronica Roth's Insurgent, sequel to Divergent. The 3 that I have my eyes on are Crazy Dangerous by Andrew Klavan, The Last Princess by Galaxy Craze, and The Vicious Deep by Zoraida Cordova.

In movies we have a couple of films that are already out on dvd, but are finally being released on blu-ray, one being Meet Joe Black which I am super excited about. If you like action and women that kick a** then you might want to try Haywire, starring MMA fighter Gina Carano. If you want a good date movie that will make you laugh and cry at the same time, then New Years Eve is definitely a must and is my personal favorite in the movie category this week.

Not much going on in TV Series, but some of you may be excited for the release of older shows finally being put on dvd for the first time, such as the animated series Shazzan and the original Invisible Man.

So what releases are you most excited about this week?

Enjoy!

New Years Eve

Directed by: Gary Marshall

Starring: Hilary Swank, Michelle Pfeiffer

New Year's Eve is all about parties, glitz, a midnight kiss, and maybe a few short-lived resolutions, right? Or could it be about something more? Valentine's Day writer Katherine Fugate and director Garry Marshall have once again joined forces to explore one of the most emotionally charged days of the year. Their uncanny ability to tell multiple stories at the same time, to intertwine those stories in the most unexpected ways, and to make sure viewers are emotionally invested in every single character makes the film an intriguing puzzle. Of course, a cast list that reads like an award-nomination roster doesn't hurt its success either. Among the host of "main characters" in the story is Claire Morgan (Hilary Swank), the woman in charge of the ball drop in Times Square. Naturally things don't go quite as planned and she's forced to do some serious on-the-spot improvising--oh, and it should be noted that she's deathly afraid of heights and there's somewhere else she really should be on New Year's Eve. Then there's the suddenly rebellious tween daughter Hailey (Abigail Breslin), who runs off to meet her boyfriend in Times Square for a New Year's Eve kiss, with her panicked mom (Sarah Jessica Parker) in hot pursuit. Mousy secretary Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) decides to finally act on her long list of New Year's resolutions and enlists the unlikely help of courier Paul (Zac Efron). An exclusive New Year's Eve party throws together caterer Laura (Katherine Heigl), entertainer Jensen (Jon Bon Jovi), and sous chef Ava (Sofia Vergara). And then there's Sam (Josh Duhamel), a wealthy playboy who just can't seem to resist keeping an unlikely appointment to meet a mystery woman he met by chance last New Year's Eve and hasn't seen since (think An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle). Other notable talent includes Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Seacrest, Hector Elizondo, Halle Berry, Robert De Niro, Lea Michele, Cary Elwes, Seth Meyers, and a host of others. While this film could easily run like a parade of stars or a rehash of the successful Valentine's Day, it's a powerful film in its own right that leaves viewers pondering whether New Year's Eve might really be about second chances, hope, and embracing what will be.
